Squid Game fans, please prepare yourself for some very exciting news. The spin-off reality series Squid Game: The Challenge is officially happening and it's coming to Netflix very soon.

Following the incredible release of the drama series in 2021 (we were obsessed), Netflix ordered a reality version of the series in June last year, and now it's finally coming to our screens in just a matter of months.

It's got the biggest prize fund of any reality show in history, a casual $4.56million, and this is everything else you need to know about the upcoming series.

What is Squid Game: The Challenge?

After the mega success of Netflix's Squid Game: The Challenge in 2021, a reality version of the series was confirmed in June 2022.

The 10-part reality series will be just like the drama series and see contestants compete in a series of challenges to win the prize fund, except without the violent ending if they don't win a challenge of course.

The series will feature 456 competitors who will be competing for the biggest prize fund in reality TV history - $4.56million (£3.65million).

So far it's unknown what the exact challenges the contestants will be facing, but we do know some of them will inspired by the challenges from the original show, as well as a few "surprising new additions".

When was the series announced?

In June 2022, Netflix announced the series in a trailer saying: "The stakes are high, but in this game, the worst fate is going home empty-handed. The biggest risk is not playing."

At the time, Netflix's VP of Unscripted and Documentary Series, Brandon Riegg thanked Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk for his support of the new series.

Squid Game: The Challenge filmed in the United Kingdom at the beginning of 2023. On January 25, Variety reported that several contestants "required medics" on the set of the show, allegedly due to the cold weather conditions. The outlet also claimed that at least one contestant had to be taken away on a stretcher during filming.

"While it was very cold on set – and participants were prepared for that – any claims of serious injury are untrue," Netflix said in a statement. "We care deeply about the health and safety of our cast and crew, and invested in all the appropriate safety procedures."

Squid Game: The Challenge was first announced by Netflix in June 2022, nine months after the scripted series came out. Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had to defend the reality spinoff from fan backlash when he was doing backstage interviews at the 2022 Emmy Awards, after winning Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.

"I think that even though our show does carry quite a heavy message — and I know that there are some concerns on taking that message and creating it into a reality show with a cash prize — I feel like when you take things too seriously, that's really not the best way to go for the entertainment industry. It doesn't really set a great precedent," Hwang said. "So, I would say that reproductions of such efforts are going to bring new meaning to the industry. And I hope that this is going to be a great new direction for the industry overall."
