High School Seniors Sneak Into Principal's House And Spend The Night In Epic Prank

The head of a boarding school unknowingly hosted more than 70 overnight guests at her on-campus home.

The epic prank was hatched last month by the graduating class at St. Andrews school in Middletown, Delaware.

In a now-viral Instagram video, Joy McGrath, who is clad in a bathrobe and yellow Crocs, wanders into her kitchen at 6 a.M. And discovers a pile of students camped out on her floor. McGrath's jaw drops and she dashes out of the room.

"I was in shock. They were in every possible corner like sardines," McGrath tells TODAY.Com. "It took me a second to realize, 'This is a senior prank!'"

McGrath returns moments later, and takes in the full scene. There are kids everywhere.

"Good morning, little bunnies!" McGrath says in the clip, as the class of 2023 erupts into laughter.

McGrath's husband, Ty Jones, was in on the wholesome gag and left the front door unlocked so they could sneak in at 1 a.M.

KaiChun "Austin" Chuang, who filmed McGrath's reaction, tells TODAY.Com that he and his peers dreamed up the idea after their senior prom.

"Mrs. McGrath invited all of us over for breakfast at like 12 a.M.," Chuang, 18, recalls. "Someone joked that they wouldn't mind going to bed right there in the living room. Then a couple of us glanced at each other like, 'hmmmm.'"

Their plan went went off without a hitch.

"I can sleep through anything," McGrath says. Case in point: McGrath, who graduated from St. Andrews in 1992, can't remember her own senior prank.

"I slept through that one, too!" she says.

Before heading back to their dorms, the seniors enjoyed a breakfast of doughnuts and coffee with McGrath and her husband.

"Mrs. McGrath takes such good care of us," Chuang says. "Whenever people have a problem, they feel comfortable talking to her. She works hard to build trust."

Model Laboratory School Senior Prank Leads To Bomb Scare

May 18—A senior prank went awry Thursday afternoon when Model Laboratory School officials mistook an item for a bomb.

Now, the students responsible could be facing severe consequences, according to school officials.

Around 4 p.M. Thursday, Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) officials were notified that a "suspicious item" had been located at Model Laboratory School after students had been dismissed for the day.

The discovery prompted a campus-wide alert and calls for evacuation of the school and the areas directly near the facility.

At 5:30 p.M., school officials issued an "all clear" alert and said the item that was found "did not constitute a threat."

EKU police, as well members from the Richmond Police Department, Richmond Fire Department, Kentucky State Police, and Madison County EMS were on scene to investigate the item.

More details about the incident emerged Thursday evening at Model Laboratory's Class of 2023 Recognition Banquet.

According to several parents who attended the banquet, Model Laboratory Superintendent John Williamson addressed the incident during his remarks.

A Model parent provided The Register with a recording of the superintendent's remarks Thursday evening.

Williamson said the "suspicious item" was part of a senior prank.

"A device, that appeared to look like a bomb, was planted in the building," Williamson said. "... We had to have the bomb squad come in and do x-rays throughout the building."

"It's a very serious matter, in fact, it's a felony," Williamson added.

Due to the incident, the superintendent also noted that one student may be facing severe consequences.

"There may be one of you who is not going to be participating in graduation, because it is a felony," Williamson said.

"Senior pranks that are harmful, destructive — and most importantly, illegal — are not really pranks," he added.

Williamson noted on Thursday that school officials hoped Model's Class of 2023 would end their last few days of high school on better terms and encouraged them to embrace a more "harmless" senior prank.

"You all have been an exemplary class, all of your years here, and we want you to go out on that good note. If you can think of something fun and harmless, that's great, we are all in," he said.

Senior Prank At Delaware Boarding School Goes Viral

MIDDLETOWN, Del. (CBS) – 'Tis the season for senior pranks. One this year out of Delaware is racking up the views on social media.

"Seventy-seven (students) in the living room, the library, the dining room, the back porch, the kitchen – they were everywhere," Joy McGrath said with a chuckle.

The Head of School for St. Andrew's in Middletown, Delaware is talking about the Class of 2023's senior prank earlier this month.

"We made it very clear that we all had to be very quiet in their house and had to go straight to bed so as to not wake her up to get that money shot," KaiChun Chuang said. The recent graduate filmed the now viral video showing McGrath opening the door to her kitchen to a room full of students.

The senior class at the boarding school snuck into McGrath's house around 1 a.M. They brought pillows, couch cushions, and blankets, and slept until McGrath came down into the kitchen at 6 a.M.

These seniors had a little help getting in. McGrath said she learned afterward, her husband, Ty, and other faculty helped. They also had coffee and donuts after the surprise prank.

It is not uncommon to see McGrath's kitchen and living room filled with students. St. Andrew's faculty lives on campus, some even in the dorms.

"When I saw other people surprised by the prank that's when I was like maybe this was a better prank than we even thought," Co-president of the Class of 2023, Trinity Smith, said.

McGrath added: "There's this moment of community and connection between a group of people that are here in pursuit of an education together, we're all working to be the best people we can, be the best citizens we can, be the best family members we can be, and the best community that we can have."

The video posted to St. Andrew's Instagram account has now gone viral with nearly 2 million likes and more than 9,000 comments after being posted 12 days ago. McGrath wrote this letter to parents about it all.

"This class really made it their mission this year as seniors to bring the school's culture back. And our culture is a culture that's totally based in connection," McGrath said.

The seniors CBS News Philadelphia spoke with agree – they never thought the prank would take off on social media. In fact, they were only videotaping it to show another faculty member McGrath's reaction.

"It's a little bit ironic because we have a no phone policy," Ford Chapman said. The Class of 2023 co-class president continued, "It's just a little bit funny our big thing is a viral video."

Viral or not – McGrath and the seniors agree these 60 seconds show just how truly close the community is at St. Andrew's and the long-lasting bonds between a teacher and her students.

"I would be happy to see any one of those kids, anywhere in the world, any time, just as happy as I was to see them that morning," McGrath said. She continued, "Before I became Head of School, I actually lived on a boys dorm with 10th-grade boys, and so I could sleep through the apocalypse. And apparently, I did!"
