Mom Speaks Out After Accidentally Inviting 487 Guests To Daughter's Birthday Party

A California mom is speaking out after accidentally inviting all 487 of her phone contacts to her daughter's upcoming first birthday party.

Emily King, who shared the hilarious incident in a now-viral TikTok video, told "Good Morning America" she still vividly remembers that sinking feeling she had when she realized she had made a giant mistake.

"I kind of like, immediately knew. I was like, 'Wait, something's wrong. … This is not happening.' So like, all the blood rushes from my body," King recalled of the moment on April 10 when she noticed the online invitation service she was using sent a digital invitation to her entire list after she had imported her phone contacts to the platform.

King said that when she was setting up her daughter Ivy's June birthday party invitation, she noticed Evite, the service she was using on her smartphone, offered an option to import the contact information of potential guests.

"I see this tab and it says 'import guests from previous parties.' And I just had a St. Patrick's Day party so I was like, 'Oh, perfect,'" King explained of her thought process.

After importing her contacts, King thought she would be able to select which one of them would receive an invitation. But, that wasn't the case.

"It took me to the actual invitation page, and it said 'Ivy's first birthday' -- and then at the bottom, it said, 'Guests: 487' … and I was mortified," King said.

"I started to look at the list and it's everyone that I had ever put in my phone," King said. "And not only that, it's everyone I put in my phone as they are stored in my phone … and everyone that I ever emailed through my job."

King, a teacher, said she was confused at first, and then unnerved that acquaintances she had met once, including her co-workers and students, were included in the guest list in addition to close family and friends she had intended to invite. The kicker, too, was that everyone received a text message invitation based on what they were labeled in her phone contacts list.

"It's like, 'cute boy from the bar' and … like 'old man neighbor' and it's like, 'Derek eyeroll emoji' and I hit this girl's car in a grocery store parking lot once [and] it said 'Jess hit car in parking lot,'" King said. "Like, all of these people and they said they're on the invite list and that's how they received the invite in their phone."

King estimated that within five minutes of realizing what she had done, she quickly deleted the party event. The invitation text messages, however, had already been sent out, and King and her friends were able to laugh about it afterward.

"At first I was mortified, but I like to think I have a pretty good sense of humor," King said. "So I was like, I was embarrassed but then also cracking up, like I couldn't stop laughing that this had happened."

King said she hopes others can learn from her mistake, which she said was simply "too funny not to share."

In a statement to "GMA," Evite said the company reached out to King when they noticed her viral TikTok post.

"We immediately reached out to Em as soon as we saw her post! While we have several steps in place so that things like this don't occur for guests, Em's journey inspired something we call the 'Emily Hotfix' that removes the 'select all' function on iOS apps. We're always learning from our users, and hope this update is a help for other users too!" the company said.

As for Ivy's first birthday party, King said it's back on and will be a "Lord of the Rings"-themed bash. Plus, she decided to expand her guest list from 50 to 70 invitees.

"It's going to be definitely a first birthday for the books. I'm really excited when [Ivy's] older to be able to tell her the story," King said.

Man Is Left BAFFLED By Disastrous Frosting Fail On His Wife's 30th Birthday Cake - After The Baker Misread Their OWN Writing

  • John Ellis, from Massachusetts, shared details of the 'cake confusion' on Reddit
  • He explained he had purchased the customized treat from a local bakery
  • But the high school sweethearts were left in stitches at the laughable result
  • An exasperated man has gone viral after he revealed the disastrous frosting fail that he discovered on his wife's 30th birthday cake.

John Ellis, from Tewksbury, Massachusetts, shared details of the 'cake confusion' on Reddit's popular Mildly Infuriating thread.

He explained that he had purchased the customized sweet treat from a local bakery for wife Chanda - but was left in stitches at the laughable result.

The post was soon flooded with thousands of comments as readers debated whether it was hilarious or upsetting.

John Ellis, from Tewksbury, Massachusetts, shared details of the 'cake confusion' on Reddit's popular Mildly Infuriating thread

He explained that he had purchased the customized sweet treat from a local bakery for wife Chanda - but was left in stitches at the laughable result

John's light-hearted post, which was shared last week, included two pictures from the incident alongside a caption that read: 'My wife's 30th birthday cake confusion.'

The first image was of the submission form that showed the word 'thirty' written in cursive as part of the request to have it piped on top.

However, the second image showed that the finished result - which was a delightful pastel-colored buttercream product - was actually adorned with the word 'hinty.'

The original Reddit post was flooded with thousands of mixed comments.

On the one hand, there were those who found the situation to be humorous, as one wrote: 'Idk, this is really funny. I would 100 per cent write, "Hinty Won" on her cake next year.'

A second person commented: 'Okay, but I busted out laughing. That's a funny mistake. I think the person who wrote the order, and decorated the cake, are not the same. And the cake decorator can't read cursive lol.'

Another added: 'Lmfao. I guess next time you will write more clearly, hahaha sorry.'

Someone else wrote: 'I'd be happy, purely because I wouldn't be thirty, I'd be HINTY years old, which is way better.'

On the one hand, there were those who found the situation to be humorous, as one wrote: 'Idk, this is really funny. I would 100 per cent write, "Hinty Won" on her cake next year'

But, on the other hand, there were those who questioned the use of cursive handwriting in the first place.

One person wrote: 'I used to work in a bakery. I was the only one who took wedding cake orders, because I could give clear instructions, and had legible handwriting. This is why!'

Another added: 'Never write in cursive for items like this.'

And a third shared: 'Reason why one should always use CAPITAL LETTERS for form filling.'

John has since spoken to Today to shed further light on the mishap.

He explained that his wife had been having a Sopranos-themed party - complete with deli platters, Italian flags and guests opting for mob wife aesthetic.

The doting husband said that he had placed an order at the bakery verbally to an employee who had written it on the order form - and so now assumes that someone else must have done the actual piping.

But, on the other hand, there were those who questioned the use of cursive handwriting in the first place

He dished: 'The party was at two o'clock and right as people were showing up my wife was like, "Did you remember picking up the cake?" and I had to run out the door real quick, grab it and rush out with it, so I didn't check it in the store.'

And so, when Chanda - his high school sweetheart - finally went to open the box at the party with all her friends gathered round, she was in for quite the shock.

She told the outlet: 'I honestly buffered for a while. I was like, "What does that say? Someone named Hinty must have a cake that says Thirty on it."'

John said that it eventually clicked and eventually pieced the mishap together after taking another look at the order form.

The couple, who own a gluten-free calzone company, admitted that they now plan on turning the innocent mistake into a yearly tradition as Chanda concluded: 'My friends have already put me in their phones as Hinty.'

Man Asks For 'Thirty' Iced On Wife's Birthday Cake, Goes Viral For Head-scratching Result

A couple in New England was left in stitches from a hilarious mistake made by their local bakery.

On April 14, Reddit user John Ellis (u/Soggy_Reindeer3635) shared a post to the subreddit r/mildlyinfuriating that quickly went viral with over 70,000 upvotes. In the post, the Massachusetts-area man shared the laughable result of errors that befell his wife Chanda Ellis' custom birthday cake.

"My Wife's Thirtieth Birthday Cake Confusion," wrote Ellis, who also shared two images that paint a vivid and comical story.

In the first photo, Ellis shares the beautifully decorated cake: pastel-colored buttercream flowers encircle a vanilla base with expertly-piped wording to complete the dessert.

How the cake reads, however, is a curiosity: "Hinty."

If you're wondering what "Hinty" means, Ellis provides context by sharing the request form, which shows where things went a little wrong. Along with "spring flowers," "glitter" and "mint green" is the word "thirty," but it's written in slightly illegible cursive.

The decorator read the form in such a way that the cursive T and H were mistaken for an upper-case H, and a cursive R was mistaken for a lower-case N.

The resulting "Hinty" may not be in the pages of Merriam-Webster's dictionary, but it has found its way into the hearts of thousands of the post's commenters.

"Cursive strikes again," wrote one user on Reddit.

"This joke can go on for 9 years. Next year get her one that says 'Hinty-One,'" suggested another Redditor, to which another replied: "9 years? This is a life-long gag! Horty, Hifty, Hinety!"

Plenty of folks chimed in to share their own cake fail experiences, some with photographic proof.

"My nephew's," wrote another Reddit user sharing their own image of a cake where the decorator took instructions too literally. "They asked for a 'big 5 somewhere' on the cake 😂."

"My aunt ordered a cake (over the phone) for my cousin's bridal shower... The cake read 'Congratulations Old Guy!'" wrote another commenter. "My cousin's name is Olga, everyone was crying they were laughing so hard."

"One year when I was like 10 they wrote zachairy or something like instead of Zachary so every birthday 15+ years later everyone says happy birthday Zach air ey instead making fun of the mistake," wrote another commenter.

As for how this all happened, the Ellises tell TODAY.Com that it came down to an innocent mixup at the bakery.

"The party was at two (o'clock) and right as people were showing up my wife was like, 'Did you remember picking up the cake?' and I had to run out the door real quick, grab it and rush out with it, so I didn't check it in the store," John says.

The couple say they prefer to keep the bakery anonymous, but they bought it from a local shop in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, where they live. Someone at the bakery listened to John's verbal instructions and wrote them down on the order form. Then, he says, a different person must have done the actual decorating.

"Late to the party, I just ripped the form off and left it in the car, bringing everything in," John says.

No one looked at the cake until the birthday girl herself opened up the box in front of guests at her "Sopranos"-themed party amongst the deli platters, Italian flags and guests dressed up in the mob wife aesthetic.

"I wish we had a point of view for me opening the box. I was like, 'Guys, I got this from the bakery down the street, gather round, it's so beautiful.'" Chanda says of the moments before she read the cake. Then, she says, when she finally took a look, "I honestly buffered for a while. I was like, 'What does that say? Someone named Hinty must have a cake that says Thirty on it.'"

After everyone at the party laughed heartily at the mishap, John realized what had happened. "It clicked, so I ran out and grabbed the form, and that's when we put it together," he says.

Chanda and John, who own gluten-free calzone company Can Be, say they plan on turning this innocent mistake into a yearly and purposeful tradition. The pair of high school sweethearts are tickled by the viral fame.

"We're happy to have a funny story about it," John says. "Any sort of discount or anything we would have gotten? We don't mind. The cake was delicious. It looks beautiful."

"My friends have already put me in their phones as Hinty," Chanda says with a laugh.
