However, he said he has been bombarded with negative comments on social media for more than 15 years for a joke about Paula Radcliffe which received little attention at the time.

In a 2008 episode of BBC comedy show Mock The Week, the panellists were talking about athletics and the renowned marathon runner having to pull out of races due to injuries.

Boyle, 52, said: "I think if Paula is watching, take comfort, I mean it's not all bad - if you were a horse you would have been shot by now."

The comic said he believes the popularity of running in the UK and Radcliffe's legendary status in the sport had led to the backlash.

Speaking on the Distraction Pieces podcast, he said: "The joke I have had the most DMs or responses about on social media is a joke that nobody remembers.

"It was about Paula Radcliffe, the marathon runner. She kept breaking down in races and I said 'if she was a horse she would have been shot.'

"Running is such a big hobby in Britain and she was such a huge star in it so honestly for about 15 years that would be the joke that if someone DM'd me saying 'you're a p***k for saying this', it was about that."

Glasgow-born Boyle said his experience should serve as a warning to comedians to be careful about making fun of popular hobbies.

"There are certain little things that you shouldn't talk about."

Former teacher Boyle shot to fame on Mock the Week in 2005 and has had a string of sell-out tours.

He won a Bafta Scotland award last year for his Channel 4 documentary Frankie Boyle's Farewell To the Monarchy.

He was cleared by TV watchdog Ofcom after he joked about petrol bombing members of the royal family in the programme

In the trailer for the show, which was aired in the run-up to King Charles' coronation, he declared: "Let's get out on the streets and raise a bottle to them… filled with petrol and a burning rag."

That comment sparked 114 complaints to the broadcasting regulator from viewers who said it incited violence towards members of the royal family.

A further 22 people complained about comments he made during the hour-long programme which they claimed were disrespectful to the late Queen and the monarchy in general.

Ofcom assessed the programme and found it did not raise issues that warranted an official investigation under the Broadcasting Code.

Boyle is currently promoting his new book A Short History Of The Apocalypse which is his guide to the end of the world.
