Top 10 Comedy Tours In 2023 - Billboard

Last week, Billboard revealed its year-end Boxscore charts, ranking the top tours, venues, and promoters of 2023. That coverage included analysis of the new wave of genre diverse artists crashing stadium stages, and in turn, our charts. Here, we are breaking down the year's biggest tours, genre by genre. Today, we continue with comedy.

Comedy is an outlier as a Boxscore genre, as it obviously exists outside of the traditional music industry. That's not to say that the two don't intersect – Adam Sandler has been a highly influential in musical comedy since the 1990s – but generally, comedians are playing a different game than Taylor Swift or Beyoncé. Most recently, Bo Burnham's genre- and form-blending Inside hit No. 7 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and has logged 125 weeks (to date) at No. 1 on Comedy Albums.

With smaller traveling production, touring comedians have simpler stage setups. That can allow them to float from theaters to arenas and from amphitheaters to clubs from night to night. They can also perform multiple shows per night without the physical and vocal tolls of headlining pop stars. Two of 2023's top 10 comedians played more than 100 shows during the tracking period, which no other act in the entire all-genre top 100 did.

Comedy's share of the top 100 tours' overall gross dipped to 1.8% this year. In part, astronomically rising ticket prices for stadium acts are creating a bigger gap between the biggest touring musicians and comedians who have stayed closer to more conservative pre-pandemic prices. Routing is also key – John Mulaney, Sebastian Maniscalco and Hasan Minhaj had much lighter schedules than in 2022.

Scroll to check out the top 10 highest grossing tours by comedy performers, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. All reported shows worldwide between Nov. 1, 2022 – Sept. 30, 2023, are eligible.

    All-Genre Top 100 Rank: N/A

Jo Koy played a variety of theaters and arenas in the U.S., mostly promoted by Icon Concerts. He did best on the West Coast, with his six best grosses coming from California, Nevada and Washington.

  • Adam Sandler Adam Sandler

    $14.2M / 141K tickets / 15 shows

    All-Genre Top 100 Rank: N/A

From the global film box office to Billboard Boxscore, Sandler remains one of the most bankable names in comedy. Austin, Dallas and Nashville were highlights on his 2022-23 tour, which continues into next year.

  • Sebastian Maniscalco Sebastian Maniscalco

    $16.8M / 130K tickets / 39 shows

    All-Genre Top 100 Rank: N/A

Maniscalco has been a road warrior over the last decade, but found a home in Vegas. He played 16 shows at the Encore Theater at Wynn Resort, making up almost $3 million of his year-end total. Casinos in New Jersey, Florida and California add to his run.

  • Taylor Tomlinson Taylor Tomlinson

    Taylor Tomlinson

Image Credit: Stephen J. Cohen/Getty Images

    $17.5M / 296K tickets / 132 shows

    All-Genre Top 100 Rank: N/A

Tomlinson played more shows than any artist on any of the 2023 Boxscore genre breakdowns. Often with multiple shows per night, she ranged from $1 million over two nights at Radio City Music Hall to $25k and 740 tickets in Brussels.

  • Peter Kay Peter Kay

    $20.5M / 276K tickets / 21 shows

    All-Genre Top 100 Rank: N/A

Kay hits the middle of the top 10, almost exclusively from shows in England. He repeated throughout the year in major markets such as Manchester, Glasgow and especially in London – in all, he played 10 shows at the O2 Arena during the 2023 tracking period.

  • Nate Bargatze Nate Bargatze

    $20.6M / 330K tickets / 113 shows

    All-Genre Top 100 Rank: N/A

More than 100 shows between November 2022 and September 2023 led to Bargatze's first hosting gig on NBC's Saturday Night Live. The Tennessee native played shows in Chattanooga, Johnson City, Memphis and Nashville, plus more than 60 others during the year.

  • Bill Burr Bill Burr

    Bill Burr

Image Credit: Michael S. Schwartz/Getty Images

    $20.6M / 231K tickets / 37 shows

    All-Genre Top 100 Rank: N/A

A mix of theaters, arenas and casinos scored Burr his second consecutive year at No. 4 on the comedy breakdown. He peaked at $1.5 million on July 7-8 at the Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena in Atlantic City, N.J.

  • Bert Kreischer Bert Kreischer

    Bert Kreischer

    $32.9M / 460K tickets / 80 shows

    All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 82

A scan of Kreischer's top markets of 2023 doesn't find New York or Los Angeles or Chicago or any other typically major market. His strongest showings were in Tempe, Ariz.; Gilford, N.H.; Tampa, Fla. And St. Louis, Mo.

  • Dave Chappelle Dave Chappelle

    Dave Chappelle

    $36.6M / 254K tickets / 19 shows

    All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 68

Chappelle made lemonade out of very few lemons, playing fewer shows than anyone in the top 10 other than Sandler. He did it by sticking to arenas exclusively, only dipping below 10,000 tickets at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, Calif. (9,862). Four shows at Madison Square Garden earned $7.9 million and moved 49,000 tickets.

  • Kevin Hart Kevin Hart

    Kevin Hart

    $67.5M / 631K tickets / 82 shows

    All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 29

Yet again, Kevin Hart takes the lead, making him the only act to repeat atop a Boxscore genre chart in 2023. Hart played as many shows as Kreischer and demanded high ticket prices like Chappelle and Sandler, amounting to an 84% lead over his closest competition. In all, he reported 27 engagements with more than 10,000 tickets sold, and 30 over the $1 million mark.

Need A Laugh? Comedy Shows In Jersey City, Hoboken Have Plenty Coming ...

As restrictions fall and people continue to get back together socially, live entertainment has been on an almost meteoric rise again in Hudson County.

With live music at White Eagle Hall and elsewhere, and art exhibits and karaoke bringing people back in, there's another element that is continuing to thrive: comedy.

Comedy had already been making a presence for itself in Hudson County long before the pandemic rolled in and brought the world to a grinding halt. Mulligan's in Hoboken had already been getting things underway in 2019 and a year before that, the Jersey City Comedy Festival planted its roots and began to grow.

Even in the chaos that ensued following 2020, the laughs began to echo from another spot -- Dorian's Red Hand in Jersey City.

Comedian Rich Kiamco, who already made a presence for himself at New York City comedy clubs, OutQ Sirius XM Satellite Radio, and the Howard Stern Show, had a vision in the latter half of the pandemic. After losing his partner to COVID-19, he had a choice to make: sit around and keep on crying (which many of us did during such an unprecedented time) or get out and do something worthwhile.

Kiamco began searching the Hudson County area for local spots for comedy shows in the fall of 2021. It was this search that would lead him to Dorian's, which was no stranger to live comedy and music in the past, but nothing really clicked before he showed up to pitch his idea. These shows would become what is known as The Laugh Tour Comedy Club.

"They thought I was crazy for wanting to do it" says Kiamco. "They had people try before and said 'yeah, come on in and do a show here in what might as well be the Bermuda Triangle.' Then Omicron hit and I thought ok, we'll get through this. We're going to push through."

The crowds were small at first, but at a time when people were still unsure whether it was safe to be around each other, that was to be expected. Kiamco even recalled what it was like doing virtual shows during the shutdown.

"I remember working with this one couple and we decided to do a virtual comedy show where only maybe four people tuned in to see it, and yet it turned out to be one of the best shows we did," he said. "It turned into a nice little intimate setting."

By the summer of 2022, more people started to feel comfortable getting together and live entertainment began making a big comeback. What also helped was the following Kaimco had across the Hudson River, with fans of his shows in NYC seeking out Dorian's to get more live comedy.

At Dorian's, Kiamco would hold two shows a night every Saturday, one after the other, until September 2022, when the shows started selling out. They now do an additional two shows every Friday night. After selling out shows for 28 weeks straight, Kiamco continues to bring in the laughs with different comedy line-ups each weekend.

"I went from standing outside asking people if they wanted to check out a comedy show to now seeing people just lining up outside," he says. "Unfortunately, some had to be turned away because we couldn't fit them all and (we'd) tell them they'll have to try the next show..."

With the Jersey City Comedy Festival approaching later in June, Dorian's will be hosting the first two rounds of the Festival on June 7 and 8.

In Hoboken, Mulligan's began doing comedy nights in 2019, which sprung up in a similar fashion to Dorian's. James Mac, who runs Headspace and Timing Comedy, had a regular gig at Lucky Jack's in New York City before the venue decided it wasn't going to do comedy anymore.

Without a place to do his show, Mac began scouting out some places before arriving at Mulligan's in Hoboken. Seeing the space inside was bigger than most places in NYC, Mac knew there was potential and met with Paul Dawson, one of the owners of the venue. Mulligan's was already doing comedy open mics.

With a background in business a needing a new space to do shows, Mac showed his business plans and showed that he could bring in his former crowd from before the quarantine. Everything began to fall into place.

"Before the world went into quarantine from the pandemic, some of the people who came out to see the shows at Lucky Jack's would come out to see what we were doing at Mulligan's," said Mac. "When the restrictions became less and less, and places began opening up again, it was kind of hard to get some of those people back. Whether it was because some of them moved out of New York at the time or they lost their jobs. It's hard to keep up with all of your audience members, but the regulars we had were still making the trek back in, and we're always happy when they do."

The private room at Mulligan's where comedy shows take place can hold up to 55 people. The comedy runs from January to November, before taking a break in December. Mac even recently did his own comedy special at Mulligan's, "Whiskey and Chem Lights," which can be seen on his YouTube channel at https://www.Youtube.Com/c/JamesMaccomedy/videos.

"I think the one thing that separates us from some of the clubs in New York City is that we have a lot of regulars and I think that's because of how we structure the show and don't use the same comics over and over again, as some shows do," says Mac. "I make a different lineup every two weeks. The only face that you'll see constantly is mine."

Each show at Mulligan's takes place the first and third Wednesday of every month. New to this year's season, Mac is adding an additional show in each month that has a fifth Wednesday. There are four months in 2023 that have a fifth Wednesday: March, May, August, and November. These will come to be known as their Comedian Spotlight Show, where an up-and-coming comic that hasn't really had an opportunity to shine can headline with a 30-minute bit and bring in their own audience. The shows might even be recorded as live comedy albums.

Aside from these spots in Hudson County, there is another just a bit out of the way but not too far away to enjoy some live comedy.

The Bananas Comedy Club, formerly located on Route 17 in Hasbrouck Heights, has now been doing comedy at The Renaissance Hotel in Rutherford. When the hotel in Hasbrouck Heights was doing construction, the comedy club was unable to do shows and decided to change locations. The venue at The Renaissance hotel can seat up to 200 people.

The Renaissance Hotel is located at 801 Rutherford Ave., right along Route 3. Their comedy shows are every weekend on Fridays and Saturdays. Upcoming shows this month include Andy Woodhull on Jan. 20 and 21. Woodhull has the honor of being the first comedian to make his network television debut on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The following week will have actor and comedian Jamie Lissow, best known for his role in the current Netflix Series "Real Rob." Tickets for the shows can be found online at https://www.Bananascomedyclub.Com.

Dorian's Red Hand is located at 555 Washington Blvd., Jersey City. Shows take place on Fridays at 7:30 and 9:45 p.M. And Saturdays at 6:30 and 9 p.M. Tickets can be booked online at https://bit.Ly/3Wl7Pk6. This Friday and Saturday, Jan. 20 and 21, will feature Luke Thayer, Chris Faga, Irene Bremis, Gus Constantellis, Ibrahim Khalif, Joanna Ross, and Kyle Gillis. The Laugh Tour can be found online at https://www.Thelaughtour.Com.

Mulligan's Pub is located at 159 1st St., Hoboken, between Bloomfield and Garden streets. Shows take place every first, third, and fifth Wednesday of the month from 7:30 to 9:30 p.M. Shows are free, but donations are accepted. You find a schedule of shows with their lineup on Eventbrite at https://bit.Ly/3GODc0K. The next show on Feb. 1 will feature Olga Namer and includes Alexis Mundy, Nya Yeanafehn, and Jatin Chhugani. Headspace and Timing Comedy can be found online at https://www.Hsntcomedy.Com.
