God Doesn't Play Favorites, But This Alabama Church Sign Says 'Roll ...
A church in Tuscaloosa brought back an oldie but a goodie for its sign to make fans smile just a week away from college football season.
Trinity United Methodist Church in Tuscaloosa, located a couple of blocks down Paul W. Bryant Drive from Bryant-Denny Stadium, often posts lighthearted messages on their marquee out front.
This week's sign says, "God doesn't have favs but the sign guy does Roll Tide!" Oh, and a reminder the worship service begins Sunday at 10:30 a.M.
Rev. Penny Ford, the church's senior pastor, told AL.Com in 2016 the church often likes to mix up the tone of their messages out front to connect with the community. The Alabama football season kicks off Saturday, Sept. 3, when the Crimson Tide will host Utah State inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. Needless to say, the gameday foot traffic will intersect with the sign's proximity to the game and University of Alabama campus.
"We're right here on the edge of campus. We know a lot of folks drive by and see the signs," Ford told AL.Com. "We kind of know the rhythm of the university community. Sometimes we try to put things that are inspirational, sometimes informational and sometimes just humorous to relieve stress that people are going through."
Ford said the church's interns typically post the messages after a group process to determine what they should say.
"Someone might send an email or a post," Ford says, which they try to translate into something light and fun that reflects their values as a congregation."
A few funny examples we've spotted throughout the years.
"Love thy neighbor even if they are not a Bama fan."
"Too hot to keep changing sign. Sin bad. Jesus good. Details inside."
Ford says Trinity has a warm congregation of about 180 people who share a solid sense of humor about it.
"They enjoy things that are funny and inspirational," she says. "We have a good time with it."
And to play into the Pokémon Go craze a few years ago, "Place of grace for decades. Poke-stop since last week."
They want to keep things light, Ford said, choosing amusing and inviting ideas that might attract residents to learn more about the church's values and mission, obviously staying far away from anything snarky, hateful or divisive. And given their proximity to Bryant-Denny Stadium, Ford says they love to tackle ideas specifically meant for football gamedays in Tuscaloosa.
A Crimson Tide fan herself, Ford said she likes to remind the community that what happens on Saturday is just a game, and treating opposing fan bases is more important and representative of faith than stressing too much over the sport.
As Ford said , the signs remain all in good fun, and the church manages to "keep things in perspective" with their marquee messages. Thankfully, that means they'll continue to entertain all of us who happen to pass by on Bryant Drive.
