'Fast & Furious' Parody 'SuperFast' Sticks Close To Home

Los Angeles didn't get chosen as the location for the latest "Fast & Furious" movie, but it did land the spoof version of the popular car chasing franchise.

The actual "Fast & Furious 7" has been filming in Atlanta to tap into Georgia's 30% tax credit, though some filming is expected to occur in L.A.

But "SuperFast," a parody of Universal's "Fast and Furious" films, began filming in Vernon, south of downtown, last week.

The independently produced movie comes from writer-directors Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg, known for the "Scary Movie" films and for parodies of "Twilight" with their satiric "Vampires Suck" and the historical epic "300" with their comical "Meet the Spartans."

Unlike "Fast & Furious 7," this film is not chock-full of stars like Paul Walker, Vin Diesel and Kurt Russell. The actors who play the title roles are relative newcomers.

The original 2001 movie, "The Fast and the Furious," was based on the street racing world of L.A. And was filmed throughout the county.

Subsequent movies, however, have mainly filmed outside of California — in Florida, Britain, Georgia, Japan and other locations, often to capitalize on tax breaks offered in those places.

The production of "SuperFast," which is based out of a soundstage in Huntington Park, is scheduled to film for four weeks in the L.A. Area.

Last week and this week, producers filmed at the Vernon Fire Department Training Center and used nearby streets for car racing scenes, according to a permit filed with FilmL.A. Inc.

"We're trying to be somewhat under the radar," said Peter Safran, the film's producer.

Safran said the movie, which has a budget of less than $20 million, did not receive a California tax credit, which is awarded by lottery because of limited funds.

"We considered shooting elsewhere, but when we looked at the number of people we would have to transport and the look of the film we wanted and the stunts, it just made sense to do it here," Safran said. "We really wanted to have the look and feel of Los Angeles and give it as much authenticity as possible."

The filmmakers also had a good experience shooting locally on their other parody movies, including 2006's "Date Movie" and 2007's "Epic Movie," as well as upcoming comedy "Best Night Ever," which filmed in Van Nuys.

"A lot of the locations that we were looking for were easily accessible," Safran said, adding that much of the film will shoot in the Huntington Park and Vernon area.

Two other high-profile movies that have recently begun filming locally are the Warner Bros. Comedy "Horrible Bosses 2," starring Jennifer Aniston and Chris Pine, and Fox's "Gone Girl," from director David Fincher and starring Oscar-winning director Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike and Neil Patrick Harris.

On-location feature production rose 19% in the third quarter in the L.A. Region, although the level was well below its peak in 1996 and was mostly for lower-budget movies. Most big studio features continue to be made in other states and countries.

Parody or not, "SuperFast" is a welcome addition to the dwindling crop of local movies, said Phil Sokoloski, spokesman for FilmL.A.

"So few features film in L.A. These days we need to hold on to whichever ones we can," he said. "I would love to have both films shot here, but if the producers of 'SuperFast' see value in filming in L.A., we're happy they're here."

'Superfast!' Fast And The Furious Parody Coming In 2015: Video

Given its multitude of sequels and numerous cheesy lines, it's hard to believe the makers of those crass movies you'd never admit to actually watching, such as Meet The Spartans and Vampires Suck, are yet to poke a little fun at the Fast and the Furious franchise.

Well, that won't be the case for long as a Fast and the Furious parody going by the name Superfast! Is apparently coming to a theater near you in 2015. A trailer for the movie emerged last year via unofficial means but now IMDb has some of the details.

The story follows undercover cop Lucas White, played by Alex Ashbaugh, who has to infiltrate a street racer gang led by Vin Serento, played by Dale Pavinski. As the trailer reveals, the movie is packed with plenty of lame jokes and bad actors, and so far it looks like the first couple of Fast movies are bagged on the most.

If you're looking for information on the real Fast and the Furious movie coming up, Furious 7, it's scheduled for release nationwide on April 3 and has already been previewed in trailer form.

Fast And Furious Parody Superfast Finds Its Vin Diesel ... - CINEMABLEND

If you're like me, hearing that The Fast and The Furious franchise has inspired a parody gives you that dull ache in the back of your head when you're hungover. (Which I'm not. Promise.) Nonetheless THR reports writers-directors Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg are gearing up for Superfast, a spoof that's meant to poke fun at the car chase franchise that already seems pretty well aware of its own outrageous quirks.

As Superfast nears its start date, the filmmakers are proud to announce they've found their Vin Diesel and Paul Walker for Superfast in Dale Pavinski and Alex Ashbaugh. This indie comedy will reportedly have a lean budget, so it's little surprise that they've cast relative unknowns in the lead roles. Ashbaugh was recently seen in the notorious Lindsay Lohan vehicle The Canyons, and Pavinksi has scored bit parts in Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and Takers. Filling out their car-stealing crew will be Cloverfield's Lili Mirojnick as the Mia (Jordana Brewster) equivalent, Law & Order's Andrea Navedo as the Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) part, and 21 & Over's Daniel Booko will play the lesser remembered role Matt Schulze portrayed in the original of Dom's friend who doesn't trust the gang's newest member.

Seltzer and Freidberg are old hands at spoofs, having first collaborated on the 1996 Leslie Nielsen espionage comedy Spy Hard, which was directed by the latter's father Rick Friedberg. The screenwriter team have made a string of spoofs including Scary Movie, Date Movie, Disaster Movie, and Epic Movie as well as the 300 parody Meet the Spartans and the Twilight-inspired Vampires Suck. All of the above are decidedly low-brow ventures, but when the casting is just right, it can make for some sharp mockeries of certain stars. For instance, check out Jenn Proske doing her best Kristen Stewart in Vampires Suck:

It could be fun to see actors aping on Walker and Diesel's typically stone-faced performances. But personally, I tend to get tired of Seltzer and Friedberg's shtick long before the credits run. Regardless, their latest movies cost about $20 mil to make, but often pull in over $80 mil worldwide. While that's peanuts compared to the $788 million Fast & Furious 6 has pulled in globally, they are still strong showings for devotedly dumb spoofs.

Superfast will roll into production in October in Los Angeles. No release date has yet been teased, but Seltzer and Friedberg's next venture The Starving Games (yes, a Hunger Games parody) will open November 8th, just two weeks ahead of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. As Fast & Furious 7 will hit theaters on July 11th, 2014, we expect Superfast will open to far less fanfare in June.
